Mazda CX-3 Crossover Coming to LA | Maita Mazda Sacramento CA

Mazda CX-3 Teaser Sketch for the LA Auto Show
The Mazda booth at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show will showcase some new crossovers. In addition to the refreshed CX-5 that we're expecting, the Japanese automaker has announced plans to unveil its new CX-3 compact crossover.

According to Mazda, the brand's entry into the compact CUV market will feature "the full range of SKYACTIV technology and KODO – Soul of Motion design." We take that to mean lightweight chassis and body architectures along with fuel-sipping gasoline and, perhaps, diesel engines.

The CX-3 will have to take on a slew of upcoming competitors, including the Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax and Jeep Renegade, and reports indicate it will share a platform with the Mazda2, which is just starting production in Mexico. We don't yet know if it will be front-wheel drive only or if all-wheel drive will be optional. The CUV is also likely to share the Mazda2's engine, which isn't yet revealed for the North American market. Japan gets the 2 with either a 1.3-liter gasoline engine or a 1.5-liter diesel.

Mazda6 Coupe Coming Along With More Mazdaspeed Models? | Maita Mazda Sacramento CA

Mazda Shinari Concept
The predecessor to the Mazda6, the Mazda 626, was sold in a multitude of body styles across the globe. It could, of course, be had as a sedan, but a two-door coupe, known stateside as the MX-6, was also available on the same platform. Now, a new report from Motor Trend claims that a two-door version of the modern Mazda6 could be on the way.
This would be remarkable for a number of reasons, as automakers have been abandoning this type of non-luxury coupe for decades. A class that counted entries from Toyota, Nissan, Chevrolet, Dodgeand Chrysler is now occupied solely by Honda with its Accord Coupe.
Ignoring that, though, MT claims we’ll see a two-door Mazda6 in the second half of 2016. When that new variant arrives, it will be with an even more dramatic version of the sedan’s Kodo design language. Mazda could rely even more heavily on styling inspiration of the Shinari Concept, which already informs the design of the current 6 sedan, when the two-door model arrives.
As for the eagerly anticipated, third-generation Mazdaspeed3, we’ll also be waiting until 2016 for that one, according to MT. When it arrives, though, it should be appropriately wild, offering up 300 turbocharged horsepowers from a blown, 2.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder engine. Unlike the past two MS3s, the next-gen model will reportedly (finally) adopt all-wheel drive, likely in the form of some lightweight contraption. As if that’s not enough good news, Motor Trend also seems to think aMazdaspeed2 and a reborn Mazdaspeed6 are on the way. It scarcely needs mentioning, but we’re doing our happy dance over this news.

CELEBRATING THE 10 MILLIONTH MAZDA SOLD IN AMERICA

In 1970, Mazda sold its first vehicle in the U.S., a rotary-powered R-100 coupe. It was the start of a journey that has seen the automaker from Hiroshima design and build some of the most-loved sports cars, sedans and SUVs in America.

In October, Mazda reached another amazing milestone when Lauren Carter, a 26-year-old guitar instructor from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, bought her very first new car—a 2013 Mazda3. It was the 10 millionth Mazda sold in the U.S.

The hand-over event took place on October 22, at Mazda of Naperville, Illinois, where Lauren first bought the 10 millionth Mazda. With her family and friends there to help her celebrate, Lauren met Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North America, to pick out her new car. After a few moments deciding which color she wanted (she chose Soul Red Metallic), Lauren and Jim swapped keys.

“I chose a Mazda because I did the research and learned that Mazda has some of the most reliable, feature-packed cars on the market,” Lauren said. “The Mazda3 is fun to drive, and I can fit my guitar and amplifier in the trunk. For me, there’s nothing better!”
While Lauren enjoys her new 2014 Mazda3, the 10 millionth Mazda is currently on its way to Irvine, California. There it will take its place among several other historic Mazda vehicles in the heritage collection, including one of the first MX-5 Miatas ever built, a 1967 Cosmo Sport 110s, and several Mazda race cars.
Check out the video and photos to see Lauren’s story, and how the connectivity and versatility of her new 2014 Mazda3 is a great fit with her job, her music, and her very large German shepherd, Briscoe.

Will Mazda sell diesel hybrids in Japan in 2016?

Posted Aug 14th 2014 8:45AM

Could the "Zoom Zoom" automaker start making hybrids that go "glug glug glug"? Mazda, known for its fuel-efficient Skyactiv engine line, will be the first Japanese automaker to make a diesel-hybrid vehicle for Japan and Europe.

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Mazda may start making its oil-burning hybrids as soon as 2016, and the powertrain may reach fuel efficiency levels of as much as 95 miles per gallon (one the more lenient Japanese driving cycle). That'd make such a vehicle line about 30 percent more fuel-efficient than standard diesels and about eight percent more fuel efficient that the Toyota Prius C compact hybrid (known as the Aqua in Japan). Mazda has been dismissive of hybrid and electric powertrains, instead focusing on Skyactiv technology to maximize fuel efficiency from conventional gas-powered engines.

Diesel powertrains account for about half of the light-duty vehicles sold in Europe each year, while Japan's diesel sales of 76,000 vehicles last year were about three times as many as were sold there in 2012.

In January, Mazda said that it would delay the introduction of its Skyactiv-D diesel engine from what was to be a spring 2014 debut. The reason was to fine-tune the engine's performance/fuel economy balance. Mazda representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from AutoblogGreen about the diesel hybrids.

Mazdaspeed2 supermini hot hatch under consideration

Posted Aug 21st 2014 2:01PM

Though the Ford Fiesta ST and Fiat 500 Abarth (and arguably the Mini Cooper S) may stand pretty much alone in the North American market, in overseas markets, supermini hot hatches are a big deal. Unfortunately, challengers like the Volkswagen Polo GTI, Seat Ibiza Cupra and Renault Clio RS 200 Turbo never make it to our showrooms, but word has it that there's soon to be a new entry on the market.

That would be the Mazdaspeed2, which would be badged in certain markets as the Mazda2 MPS. Speaking with Australian site CarAdvice.com.au at the launch of the Mazda2 on which it would be based, the Japanese automaker's global sales chief and the hatchback's deputy product manager hinted that such a product is definitely being discussed, even if it hasn't yet been approved.

This wouldn't be the first time such a notion were entertained, as Mazda has shown numerous performance concepts based on the previous Mazda2/Demio over the years, but none have come to fruition.

If green-lit for production, the Mazdaspeed2 would likely pack a small turbocharged engine (potentially one being developed for the new MX-5 Miata) rather than a larger naturally aspirated one. Additional upgrades would also be in store, including larger rolling stock and brakes as well as upgraded aero and suspension components. Of course the question of whether the Mazdaspeed2 would make it to North American showrooms is another matter entirely, but let's see if the Zoom-Zoom brand actually builds it first.

2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata

2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata

With the upgrades to the Mazda6 midsize sedan and Mazda3 compact hatchback and sedan complete, the time has come for an update to Mazda’s popular and iconic roadster, the MX-5 Miata. The reveal of the next-generation car is expected to come soon, according to a report from Britain’s Autocar, with the debut believed to be at next month’s Chicago Auto Show.
Mazda initially targeted an ambitious curb weight goal of 2200 lb for the next-generation car, but indications are the final curb weight will come in closer to 2400 lb, a weight savings of between 150-200 lb compared to today’s car. Due to affordability considerations, the body is believed to be primarily steel, but with strategic lightening of specific components to keep weight low.
Initial reports suggested a turbocharged engine for the new Miata, but it now looks like naturally-aspirated I-4 engines of 1.5 liters and 2.0 liters will be offered in various markets. As with past Miata models, the focus will be more on balanced performance and andling rather than outright power.
The next-generation Mazda Miata is expected to be slightly longer than today’s car for a roomier interior, as well as making space for the Skyactiv engines, which have a long and bulky exhaust manifold design to enable their high fuel efficiency. Efficiency gains are expected to be in the neighborhood of 30 percent, which would translate to roughly 27 mpg city and 36-37 mpg highway, over the current Miata’s 21/28 figures.
The popular power retractable hardtop will continue on the new model, with a new design that preserves more trunk space. A canvas-top will still be offered.
